Two days in May, in Figueira da Foz, TDM Portugal organized an event called “My Europe Point” as part of the “Changemakers for European Democracy” project. This initiative was designed to ignite a deeper understanding and participation in the forthcoming European Parliament elections, focusing particularly on empowering and informing first-time voters.
The primary aim was to explore the European Parliament’s working mechanisms and functions and highlight its influence on daily life. The event featured interactive sessions, including discussions with policy-makers, live Q&A segments, and the distribution of informative materials about the EU’s history and its parliamentary processes.
One of the key features of “My Europe Point” was the setup of informational stands where volunteers distributed flyers, booklets, and promotional materials. These materials were designed to be engaging and accessible, providing clear information that was suitable for a diverse audience.
In addition to informational distribution, the event included a simulated voting process. A ballot box was installed where participants could leave messages or proposals for EP candidates, simulating the act of voting and thereby fostering a practical understanding of the electoral process.
The event has set a precedent for how engagement in political processes can be effectively facilitated in the community. By providing a platform for direct interaction between citizens and their decision-making representatives, TDM Portugal has contributed significantly to the enhancement of democratic engagement in Portugal.
