Informing Maltese Youth about their European identity and duties

Jun 3, 2024 | Youth Outreach, Malta, School Visits

TDM 2000 Malta has been actively involving local youth (aged 13 to 20 years old) in Malta in a series of activities designed to enhance their understanding of the European Union, its values, and its decision-making processes. Various educational visits have been organized across the island, including in secondary schools, high school and the University of Malta.

During these visits, students have participated in informative sessions covering the different EU institutions, their functions, and policies. These sessions have provided valuable insights into the role of the EU in their daily lives. To further enrich their learning experience, students have engaged in a variety of interactive activities. Some of these include:

  • Activities exploring EU History: These quizzes help students test and expand their knowledge of the European Union’s history and its development over time.
  • Debates on the advantages and disadvantages of the EU: Through structured debates, students discuss and weigh the pros and cons of the EU, fostering critical thinking and public speaking skills.
  • “Where Do You Stand?” activity: This activity encourages students to express and discuss their perspectives on various topics such as democracy, youth participation, and active citizenship. It aims to foster open dialogue and a deeper understanding of different viewpoints.
  • Simulated voting Exercises: These exercises allow students to simulate the voting process, encouraging them to reflect on their opinions and understand the decision-making processes within the EU.

Overall, the activities implemented by TDM 2000 Malta have significantly contributed to the local youth’s comprehension of the European Union and its impact on their lives. As the legal voting age in Malta is 16, it is very important to start discussing these topics with youngsters early on – in order to prepare well-equipped citizens who will participate in the democratic processes of the EU. Through educational visits and engaging activities, students have gained a deeper understanding of EU institutions and policies, enhancing their knowledge and critical thinking skills.
